In the case of Homer, more even than in that of other classical authors, textual criticism is inextricably bound with reception history (Battezzato 2003 is a rare and successful example of how textual criticism and reception studies can be combined). The modern editor of Homer often has to adjudicate between the views of different interpretations and versions of Homer, rather than simply having to restore a corrupted text. More fundamentally still, the editor must choose between different goals: s/he can try to reconstruct the text available to the Alexandrians (a task which van Thiel, 1991 and 1996, admirably succeeds in accomplishing) or attempt to produce a viable seventh-century text (this is the overall intent of West, though he makes considerable concessions to the transmitted text; cf.
Comparable models for thinking about other poetry are rare, even though the Anacreontic tradition like many other literary traditions is repetitive in its own way: repeated metrical patterns, repeated themes, repeated jokes, etc. The recent rise in the use of cognitive science in literary studies is promising here, and may eventually help analyze the traditional aspects of Anacreontic poems like Cowley’s. There is almost certainly something hardwired in the appeal of particular simple forms and particular themes like drink and desire.
